When I started using the Aveeno fragrance free moisturising lotion, which is made with oats, I felt guilty that I was spending extra money on something which I could have used a cheaper product. However, as soon as I started using the Aveeno lotion I was hooked. From the first week I noticed the difference that the Aveeno daily moisturising lotion made to my skin and I decided that I would continue to use it as a part of my skincare regime.
Discover Oats
Oats have a long history of being valued for skin care dating back to the ancient Greeks and Romans who used oat baths to heal skin ailments. Aveeno scientists developed innovative formulations, using finely milled (colloidal) oatmeal, which retains the naturally active benefits of the oats. The innovation of fine milling allowed the colloidal oatmeal to retain its naturally active benefits, which were clinically shown to moisturise and relieve dry skin.
The Benefits of Oats
- Relieves dry skin:
- The natural colloidal oatmeal formulas of Aveeno moisturise and help protect skin.
- Soothes scratchy, irritated skin
- Colloidal oatmeal provides temporary skin protection and when used in a bath treatment it can relieve minor itching and irritation due to rashes, poison ivy/oak/sumac, and insect bites.
- Soothes extra dry, aggravated, cracked skin
- Colloidal oatmeal combined with menthol, Shea butter and other skin protectants has been clinically proven to relieve aggravated, extra dry, and cracked skin.
- Moisturises skin
- Oat proteins leave a protective barrier on the skin, which prevents water loss to help maintain moisture.
There are several types of moisturizers you can choose from, according to your skin's needs. Humectants, such as glycerine and lactic acid, attract water and help skin retain moisture. Emollients, such as fatty acids and ceramides, soften and soothe. Occlusive creams (known as “barrier creams”), such as petrolatum or lanolin leave a film on the surface of the skin and seal in moisture.
Most products contain a combination of humectants, emollients and Occlusives, so it’s easiest to choose a moisturizer based on your skin type—there are formulas for oily or acne-prone skin (look for “oil-free” on the label); sensitive skin; and dry or mature skin. You’ll also notice that moisturizers have different textures and occlusives tend to be the heaviest of the bunch.
Lotions are light, and creams are a little more substantial and for anyone with dry or extra-dry skin, you want something that has more substance—it’s better to use a cream, which tends to protect skin better than lotion. Skin tends to be drier in colder months, so use Aveeno moisturising cream in fall and winter, and switch to a lotion for warmer weather.
